Models
Many projects involving plus size models begin as a labor of love for the founder. But some online sites were born out of the anger that the founders felt toward how plus size models are treated, when compared with the “mini” models so popular these days. Information for the stick-figure crowd was quite easy to come by, but there was a lack of usable information on the internet for models who aren’t “sticks”.
The internet is teeming with articles and sites for and about models, but when it came to plus size models, there was relatively little information available. So, some of the plus size models joined the founders in the creation of websites and resource directories specifically for models of plus size clothing.
Before the year 2000, these groups were only linked by small mailing lists, and now they are fully functioning communities with information accessible online to many other plus size models. They educate and inspire women of like size everywhere in the world. They have made an impact, and what once was a hobby and then a labor of frustration is now a labor of love. It enriches both the women who work on the sites, and those who visit the sites to gather information or to find like voices.
The market for plus size models is expanding all the time, and there are more designers looking for them every day. Department stores that used to snub their noses when people asked for plus size clothing now entreat designers to fill their racks with more and more different styles. And plus size models are at the center of the story. They used to send out many photos with no results, and now they are in demand, and their profession has become much more lucrative.
